Chapter 14

Matlock House, London

24 May 1810

“I’ll wear the yellow one,” Elizabeth pointed to the most modest of three dresses her mother bought her for the ball.

“But the blue one is breath-taking,” Georgiana added.

“Do you see that neckline?” Elizabeth looked at her cousin with annoyance.

“What’s wrong with it?” Lady Matlock asked, staring quizzically at the dress.

“There isn’t one,” Elizabeth answered, seeing how low the dress would fall on her chest if she chose the blue gown. She was not going to allow her bosom to be on display for men like this.

“Oh, Lizzy,” Lady Matlock threw her hands up in surrender. “Choose whichever you want. Just don’t you dare ruin my ball, young lady.”

“I wouldn’t do it,” Elizabeth smiled mischievously at her mother.

It has been almost six weeks since Darcy left for London, and Elizabeth was all anxious to know how the things with Mr. Wickham and Jane’s sister went. Just before she left Pemberley, she received a letter from Jane informing her that the couple had been found but nothing more. Even when Thomas had arrived at Pemberley to escort the girls to Town, hadn’t brought any particular news about Darcy and his dealings with the scoundrel.

And now she was sitting in her dressing room and preparing for her mother’s ball and not enough happy for the evening since Richard and Fitzwilliam were gone and she would only have Thomas for an agreeable dance partner.
